You may feel the presence of the penile implant at first. The implant is a new foreign body, so it is normal that the body undergoes an adaptation period to assimilate the implant. It will take about 3 weeks – 1 month to get used to it. The implant will then become part of your body and you will no longer feel it.

Don’t worry, the scars are located under the penis, between the penis and the testicles. They are very discreet.

Penile implant insertion can positively influence your libido: men who are offered the penile implant are in a quality of life downward spiral and, above all, are avoiding contact with their partner. So, the satisfaction of having an effective solution results in renewed confidence, libido recovery and an optimal quality of life.

The penile implant has a lifespan of around 10 years. Obviously, the duration depends on the frequency of use. The implant has no expiry date like other prosthetic devices: if the person no longer wishes to use it an if there is no complication, it does not have to be removed. Is there an advantage to not removing an implant? It enables the penis to be supported and so avoid shrinkage.

Before the operation, certain hygienic rules must be respected. It is recommended to not garden barehanded in order to avoid micro-cuts, brush your teeth regularly in order to prevent a dental abscess. Implant infections are usually germs introduced by the patient and not germs on the implant. After the operation, when handling the prosthesis, it is highly recommended to check hand hygiene.

Both help give you the ability to have an erection satisfactory for intercourse.

The main difference is that the Genesis is a flexible (malleable) implant that consists of two firm but bendable rods that are placed into the shaft of the penis (corpora cavernosa). There are no other parts to this implant. To have an erection, you simply hold the penis and move it into the desired position. When you are finished, you return the penis to its tucked-down position1

With the hydraulic penile prothesis Titan, you inflate the cylinders by squeezing the pump bulb located in your scrotum, and deflate by pressing the release valve to return the fluid from the cylinders into the reservoir.

Certain conditions are essential in order to carry out the surgical operation:

  • All other less-invasive treatments have failed
  • If you have contraindications, experience adverse effects or are refractory to medical therapy
  • If you are diabetic, you should ensure that your diabetes is well controlled
  • You must be in good health to withstand the effects of general anaesthesia
  • A compromised immune system or any other condition that would compromise healing should be thoroughly evaluated prior to surgery

The implantation of this device should only be considered in patients whom the physician determines are adequate surgical risks.

A penile implant is a surgical operation; it is therefore essential to consult a health professional. You should make an appointment with your  General Practitioner, who will then refer you to a specialist (urologist, etc,.) who can explain the penile implant to you if you feel it is necessary.

The key is to talk to your doctor about it quickly, in order to define the cause of your erectile dysfunction and set up therapeutic actions. Apart from drug or surgical management, it is important that you have the courage to talk about it, to receive informed advice from professionals (General Practitioner, urologist or even sexologist) who will be able to assist you, calm you and help you to see things more clearly.

Absolutely! A healthy lifestyle can contribute to improved erectile function. By healthy lifestyle is meant physical exercise, a balanced diet and the cessation of a variety of addictions (tobacco, alcohol). Excessive stress can also be a major cause of erectile dysfunction by blocking communication between the brain and the penis. Find more advices in our Lifestyle video playlist.

The first step is undoubtedly to talk about it. It is essential that you consult your General Practitioner as soon as the first symptoms appear, they will then refer you to a specialist. They will establish a precise diagnosis and propose a treatment that best meets your needs. Have no taboos and speak freely: you are not the only man suffering from erectile dysfunction!

Prostate cancer treatment (i.e radiotherapy…) or surgery (i.e radical prostatectomy…) can have repercussions on your sex life like erectile dysfunction. However, don’t give up, as it is important for you to continue to be sexually active. We recommend that you establish a dialogue with your partner to find solutions together to rekindle your desire.

The erection is closely linked to the blood vessels in your body. In fact, dysfunctional blood vessels and arteries can prevent erection. This dysfunction can lead to a cardiovascular problem. Consequently, as soon as erectile dysfunction appears, it is important to visit your doctor to check for underlying vascular problems. To avoid cardiovascular problems, maintain a healthy lifestyle: smoking, high blood pressure and obesity are three factors that can negatively impact your cardiovascular system and consequently, your sex life. Similarly, certain cardiovascular disease treatments can sometimes lead to erectile dysfunction. These notably include beta-blockers and thiazide diuretics.

As they get older, some men may experience changes in their sexuality. There is in fact an increase in dysfunction among men aged 70 to 79 compared to those aged 60-69. If you find yourself in this situation, make an appointment with your doctor to quickly address the issue.

Two criteria are essential for a healthy sex life: communication and an open mind! Have the courage to talk about it, erectile dysfunction is not a taboo. You can confide your feelings to a sexologist, who will advise you on the attitude to take and above all, on the construction of a brand new sexuality based on three key words: spontaneity, sensuality and sharing! Above all, talk to your partner, their support is essential. Try out something new, stimulate different areas and above all: forget performance and focus only on desire!

Drugs such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra may be recommended in cases of erectile dysfunction. Purely mechanical methods (ED vacuum system or pump) or surgical methods (penile implant) are also an option.

Don’t worry, occasional sexual failure is not a health problem. However, if this failure has been present for more than three months and occurs during intercourse, then the term erectile dysfunction is appropriate. In this case, we advise you to talk to your doctor as quickly as possible, who will refer you to a specialist, if necessary.

After 10 years, if you are sexually active, you may need to change the penile implant due to a mechanical failure or device weakness. The operation is very simple, with a short period of hospitalisation.

After surgery, you will receive various instructions. On the following post-operative day, the catheter will be removed and home-based dressing care must be carried out. At the same time, you will notice the presence of a localized haematoma on the scrotum. After a few days, it will recede and you will be able to feel the pump through the skin. During the first few days, it is recommended not to handle the pump and not to activate it, so as to allow healing to take place.

The penile implant provides the patient with the ability to engage in penetrative sexual activity without interfering with urination, ejaculation, sensation, or orgasm.4

Everyone is different and recovery time varies, but typically it’s between 4-6 weeks until you can resume sexual activity3. Your physician will determine what you can and can’t do during this time. It is important to follow all recommendations from your physician for the best outcome.

Each penile implant is custom-fitted to your anatomy, and the implant itself does not lead to a loss in size. Depending on your medical history, changes in anatomy or atrophy can result in loss of penile length prior to the implant, and it may not be unusual to lose 0,5-12 centimeters from your original erect length.

Like any surgical procedure, there may be some complications. This is because device infection, bleeding, mechanical failure, pain, decreasing of penile length, changing in shape, reducing penile sensation, erosion, device migration… may occur after the operation. Obviously, if you notice any bruising on the scrotum, swelling, discharge or even pain in the penis, contact your urologist immediately. A revision surgery may be required.
